Diagnosis, treatment options, and Risk Factors
Once we suspect you are suffering from low testosterone, Dr. Seltzer will order bloodwork to determine your levels, as well as other tests to monitor for side effects. Your level of testosterone and your symptoms will guide the appropriate treatment.
There are a variety of different ways to replace testosterone. These include injections, patches, creams, gels, and capsules. You and Dr. Seltzer will discuss which form is the most appropriate for you.
As with any treatment, there are always risks and side effects. Risks of testosterone replacement therapy include a thickening of the blood, water retention, worsening of sleep apnea, acne, and possibly an increase in prostate size. However, it does not appear that testosterone replacement therapy increases prostate cancer risk.
TRT is a big decision which is why we encourage our patients to read Androgens: Clinical Research and Therapeutics and Testosterone Replacement Therapy and Prostate Cancer.
